Hong Kong’s 2014 Chinese New Year Festival celebrations are off to a galloping start as the city hosts a series of colourful events to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Horse.  The festive celebrations will kick off on the first day (January 31) of the Lunar New Year with the spectacular Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade. Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) this year’s event is themed “New Year Party @ World City” and will include a variety of equine elements to tie in with the Year of the Horse. 
The Parade will feature 34 festive floats and performing troupes from 15 countries and regions and 10 international performing troupes including the Aussie Cheer and Dance Collectivefeaturing Pride Dance Team representing Australia. Hailing from Melbourne, Pride Dance Team is a competitive cheerleading dance team which has recently had huge success on the World stage. The Team were selected to compete at the invitation-only IASF Dance Worlds in the USA in April 2013 and became the first ever Australian team to medal in any genre in the history of this prestigious competition, winning a silver medal. The Parade will also feature 13 floats and 11 local performing troupes with roving performances along the parade route.
Hong Kong will continue to celebrate the Lunar New Year over 15 action-packed days with age-old traditions, cultural festivities and family celebrations. Other major events on the calendar include the Hong Kong Well-wishing Festival, performing arts programmes at the West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre and the Spring Lantern Festival, informally known as ‘Chinese Valentine’s Day’ (February 14).

Chinese New Year Flower markets
Flower markets are an indispensable part of the Chinese New Year celebrations and will be open daily at various locations across Hong Kong.
Lunar New Year Fireworks – February 1 at 8pm
The second day of Chinese New Year will feature an amazing display of fireworks to usher in the Year of the Horse. Visitors can join the throng of spectators, who line both sides of Victoria Harbour, to watch this spectacular display.
Chinese New Year Raceday – February 2
On the third day of Chinese New Year, it is customary for local sports fans to head to the Sha Tin Racecourse to celebrate the first race day of the Lunar New Year. The stands will be jam-packed with excited race fans looking to get the New Year off to a good start with a winning ticket.
Lunar New Year Cup – January 31 – February 3
One of the sporting highlights of the year, the Chinese New Year soccer tournament will provide sports fans with thrill-a-minute action on the pitch.
